If there’s one area that the healthcare industry must improve, it’s cyber defense. Seventy percent of cybersecurity professionals surveyed by HIMSS in 2020 reported a “significant security incident” had affected their organization, including phishing (57%) and ransomware (20%), while HHS notes that the average cost to resolve a ransomware attack is roughly $1.27 million. These incidents also risk an organization’s reputation, client relationships, and — when it comes to government contracts — fines for noncompliance.

In order to avoid a potential network breach and data loss, it’s important for businesses to establish short-term and long-term updates. While some certifications are required among DoD contractors versus those in the private sector, there are many changes — specifically those for the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) — that are likely to be adopted industry-wide.
